This was actually the first test outing for my new SoftPanels 2x3 LED light- I wondered if it was finally bright enough to use as a main light for stills, rather than just for video. Generally, you need more light for stills because you usually shoot at 1/125th or quicker and ISO 100, whereas video you usually shoot at 1/50th, we're fine with the grain at ISO 800. One expects motion blur as part of the style and look of motion pictures, whereas for stills we want crispness and frozen action. It was also a chance to practice shooting with a 24-70mm f/2.8 zoom. I usually prefer prime lenses but the dungeon is such an enclosed space with restricted shooting angles that having a zoom does allow one to get compositions that would be tricky with a fixed focal length. The blue light from the window is another continuous LED, by the way, an Arri L5C. Good result all in all- I don't think I'll be hanging up my studio flash units any time soon, but it extends the shooting envelope and goes a long way towards bridging the gap between studio lighting conditions and pure available/low light.
